The Jesus And Mary Chain
(Creation/Sony)

In another lifetime The Jesus And Mary Chain were the hippest rock'n'roll band on the planet (about 1985 actually), bashing out a mealstrom of fuzz-pop that offered a useful alternative to Nik Kershaw and Howard Jones. They've influenced a thousand bands, yet sales have never met the chart-topping expectations of the two Reid brothers. Munki is unlikely to change anything. While there are some fine melodic and chunky tunes (the Smithereens' I Love Rock'n'Roll and Star Dust Remedy), the overall odour is suspiciously like a band slowly decomposing. 6/10
