I Love Rock N Roll
Victoria Segal / NME
23.05.1998
You'd never believe it from this song though. Not a patch on the Joan Jett number of the same name. If 'I Love Rock N Roll' arrived in a plain paper sleeve from a bunch of 16-year-olds in Sunderland, it still wouldn't be good enough. Allowing the Mary Chain's legend to gloss over its failings - the jolly brass, the (Christ) Teenage Fanclub-style guitars - would be an insult to them and those who loved them. Maybe it's Creation's fault, and Jim and William feel like stray apostles returning to a religious cult they once believed in, only to discover it's acquired a fleet of 93 Rolls-Royces and dubious new habits. Who knows. SFA, save us now.
